Nice addition for hardcore gamers
The Pelican Gel Skins are small plastic-rubber ovals that stick on either side of your XBox 360 controller. If your hands get sweaty, they can help you hang on to the controller more easily.
The pads have a peel-off backing and then just stick with built-in glue to the sides of your controller. It's very easy to attach them. The pad itself is sort of "sticky" and holds well in your hand. There are small raised bumps on the pads to help further with the hand grip.
So the question becomes - is this really necessary? It's less than $10 for 4 skins (2 controllers' worth) so it's not a lot of money you're spending. The sides of the standard controller are quite slick and smooth. You probably don't care at all if you play Xuma for an hour or two. On the other hand if you get into a weekend-long Doom fragfest, with your heart pounding and sweat building up, it can definitely help to get a better grip on the controller.
One thing to keep in mind is that the grips are not "zero thickness". If your hands are on the small size, it might be that the current controller fits you perfectly - but that the controller plus grip is going to be a bit too bulky for you. Of course a lots of those sorts of things come down to what you're used to. After a few weeks with the grip, you might not mind that at all.
If you're a casual gamer, you probably won't need these gel pads. If you're a hard core gamer that plays multiple hours at a time, give them a try. If you really don't like them, you'll probably find a friend who will gladly take them off your hands.
Definitely worth the money
When I ordered this, I expected 2 skins that just stuck on to the sides of the controller. In all actuality, I got 4 skins (2 for each controller). They are manufactured by Pelican and are of pretty good quality.
The only drawbacks that I've noticed, which have all been minor, is that the 3M sticky glue was not placed in the right place on the backside. A couple were crooked, some were more towards the top, others towards the bottom. But, it really didn't affect the actual installation.
The other thing that I was disappointed in was that there were no directions. On the back of the gels, there is a R and L. But, it didn't really tell you where the best place was to install them. So, I actually put one in each and with the sticky side exposed, and gripped the controller like I would when I play. This basically put the gels where they needed to be.
This is also fairly minor, but the picture makes it appear as if the skins are black... they are not black. One set it white, and the other set is the grey that is on the controller. Like I said, not a big deal, but not what I had expected.
So, overall, I gave this product 5 stars because it does it's job. I don't think the minor drawbacks impact the usability at all, but they would have been more helpful if I had known in advance so I could be more accurate with my expectations. Also, like I said before, it's worth the $5+ for anyone who wants a little extra grip on their controller.
Fantastic value, and remember Krazy Glue solves everything!
These are a fantastic value under $7.00. I've used them for years, and even when first purchasing them I realized that more adhesive is necessary if you want a permanent stick. Use any 'krazy glue' instant bonding glue around the edges and in the center, and they will never ever move on you one millimeter! White and grey were better looking than these, but a minor gripe. They would've gotten 5 stars, but I see the Rocket pads or similarly named product out there and they may do a better job. But when it comes to getting out of the way of my hands, and allowing a 'larger' grip for adults, nothing so far has touched these! I worry that the rocket grips version of this product would be too intrusive given the fact they overlap over the face of the controller. They are cheap as well, and perhaps worth buying to find out.
